Studio portrait of 504 Private (later Lance Corporal) John Charles Campbell, 19th Battalion of Fairfield, NSW. A carter prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 25 June 1915. He was killed in action on 27 February 1917 at Le Sars, Somme, France, aged 22. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
