Studio portrait of 4994 Private William Carratt, 30th Battalion of Newcastle, NSW. An apprentice fitter prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Marathon (A74) on 10 May 1917. He was killed in action on 28 August 1918 during operations east of Foucaucourt, France, aged 19. He is buried in the Assevillers New British Cemetery, France.
