Description
Studio portrait of 2815 Private Herbert Cecil Fowler, 3rd Pioneer Battalion (later 1st Company Australian Machine Gun Corps) of Parramatta, NSW. An orchardist prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Benalla (A24) on 9 November 1916. He was wounded in action on 4 November 1917 during operations at Passchendaele, Belgium and died on 5 November 1917 at the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, Belgium, aged 19. He is buried in the Nine Elms British Cemetery, Belgium. His brother, 2815A Private Roy Emanuel Fowler was killed in action near Meteren, France on 27 May 1918. (see P08624.464).
