Description
Studio portrait of 2815 (later 2815A) Private Roy Emanuel Fowler, 3rd Pioneer Battalion (later 1st Battalion Australian Machine Gun Corps) of Parramatta, NSW. An farmer prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Benalla (A24) on 9 November 1916. He was killed in action on 27 May 1918 during operations near Meteren, France, aged 24. He is buried in the Meteren Military Cemetery, France. His brother, 2815 Private Herbert Cecil Fowler was wounded in action at Passchendaele, Belgium and died of his wound on 5 November 1917.
