Description
The Cenotaph in Martin Place, Sydney. The Cenotaph was designed by Sir Bertram MacKennal and features a stone base and altar of 23 pieces of Moruya granite and two sentinel bronze figures at each end. On the sides of the stone altar are inscribed the words,"Lest we forget" on the north face, and, "To our glorious dead", on the south and GPO face, which is also considered the front of the Cenotaph. The stone altar, minus the two sentinel bronze figures, was dedicated on 8 August 1927. MacKennal sculptured the two bronze figures, a soldier and a sailor, that were cast in London by the A B Burton Foundry. The completed Cenotaph was unveiled on 21 February 1929.
