The Sydney Exhibition Building in Prince Alfred Park, adjacent to the Central railway station. ...
The Sydney Exhibition Building in Prince Alfred Park, adjacent to the Central railway station. The building housed the Australian War Memorial Museum exhibition after the Australian War Museum's temporary exhibition, housed in the Melbourne Exhibition Building, was closed in January 1925 (after a 1923 report from the fire commissioner stating that the mostly wooden Exhibition Building was a fire hazard and that the collection was at great risk). There had been a number of attempts to have an exhibition in Sydney, and despite opposition from some Sydney City Council aldermen, the War Museum Committee secured a lease on the vacant Sydney Exhibition Building in November 1924. A display on the general lines of the Melbourne exhibition was installed and the Australian War Memorial Museum (as the exhibition was known in Sydney) was opened to the public on 3 April 1925 and officially opened by the Governor General, Lord Foster, on 8 April 1925. The very popular Sydney exhibition was closed in 1935.
