Description

The 28cm German railway gun known as the `Amiens gun' captured by AIF troops near Harbonnieres in France on 8 August 1918. The camouflage pattern appears to be freshly painted and the sign, "Captured by British 4th Army", originally painted on both sides of the mount in France, that was also a feature when the gun was on display at the Central Railway Station in Sydney, is no longer visible. This photograph was likely taken while the gun was on display at the Canberra Railway Station between 1923 and 1943. The barrel of the gun and the roof of the cabin are now in the collection of the Australian War Memorial.
