Studio portrait of 770 Private (Pte) Charles Daniel McCarthy, 2nd Battalion, of Narromine, NSW. ...
Studio portrait of 770 Private (Pte) Charles Daniel McCarthy, 2nd Battalion, of Narromine, NSW. An assembler and farm hand prior to enlisting on 12 August 1914, Pte McCarthy embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Suffolk (A23) on 18 October 1914. He served at Gallipoli and in Palestine, where he was promoted to the rank of Corporal and, on 24 March 1916, to the rank of Sergeant (Sgt). Sgt McCarthy arrived in France on 28 March 1916 for service on the Western Front. He was killed in action by shell fire at Pozieres, France, on 24 July 1916. Sgt McCarthy was 21 years of age. Note the hand coloured blue and yellow ribbon. This resembles the ribbon awarded to attendees of the coronation of George V in England in 1911. Sgt McCarthy had been a member of the Juniour Cadets and had travelled to England as part of the Coronation Contingent. On the bottom right hand corner is written: ST GEORGE DEI.
