Description

Communist military cemetery near The Horseshoe feature, with the Long Hai mountains in the distance, Long Dat district (formerly Dat Do district), Ba Ria-Vung Tau (formerly Phuoc Tuy) province, visited by the authors in 1995/96. Commemorating North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong Liet Si ('revolutionary martyrs'), such memorials were erected throughout Vietnam after the communist victory of 1975. Generally 'socialist realism' in design, the cemetery headstones usually cover empty graves. Little trace remains of the war memorials and military cemeteries erected by the Republic of (South) Vietnam as they were razed by the communists soon after their victory.
