Studio portrait of 2909 Private (Pte) Howard Joseph Whiteman, 33rd Battalion, of Narrabri, NSW. A grazier prior to enlisting in April 1916, Pte Whiteman embarked from Sydney with the 6th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Beltana (A72) on 25 November 1916. Pte Whiteman was killed in action by a shell explosion at Passchendaele, Belgium, on 19 October 1917. He was 25 years of age.
