Informal portrait of 4355 Private (Pte) Throsby William Yabsley, 2nd Battalion, of Berrima NSW, and, on horseback, a child thought to be his nephew. Pte Yabsley, a painter prior to enlisting in August 1915, embarked from Sydney with the 13th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Aeneas (A6) on 20 December 1915. During training in Egypt Pte Yabsley was transferred to the 54th Battalion. His unit arrived for service in France on 29 June 1916. Pte Yabsley was killed in action near Fleurbaix, France, during the Battle of Fromelles, on either 19 or 20 July 1916. He was 26 years of age.
