History / Summary
A 19 year old bushman from New South Wales, Lewis Foster enlisted with the AIF in January 1915. He served as a private with the 4th Battalion, embarking with his unit from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on 17 March 1915. He arrived at Gallipoli on 31 May 1915.
Foster sustained a gunshot wound to the head in August 1915 and was admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital.
He rejoined the 4th Battalion in September 1916 in Belgium. He was wounded in action for a second time in January the following year with a gunshot wound to his right thigh and knee. Embarking for England on HS Aberdonian, he was admitted to London General Hospital in February.
Foster embarked for Australia in July 1917 to undertake Home Service – the reasons stated being ‘age and myalgia’. He was discharged from the AIF in March 1918.
