Description
Studio portrait of VX34531 Corporal (Cpl) Charles Henry James Minto Lumsden, 2/6 Battalion. Lumsden, a farmer from Brookside, Vic (originally from Montrose, Scotland), enlisted on 2 July 1940. He sailed for the Middle East on 5 February 1941 and served in Palestine, Greece, Syria and Ceylon before returning to Australia. In April 1945 he was posted to New Guinea. Cpl Lumsden was killed in action at Wewak on 5 August 1945, aged 25. He is buried at Lae War Cemetery, Papua New Guinea. This image is taken from "The Ivanarian", a magazine of the Ivanhoe Grammar School in Melbourne, Vic. During the Second World War the school honoured "old boys" who had enlisted and died by including a short biographical piece and in many cases a portrait.
