A rubber planter from Hampton, Vic, Handfield enlisted on 24 June 1940 and later transferred to the 39 Squadron. Sgt Handfield was killed on operations in the Middle East on 15 February 1942, aged 25. He is buried at the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.
