Studio portrait of 1456 Private (Pte) Horace Leslie Carroll, 14th Battalion, of North Ballarat, Vic. A bricklayer prior to enlistment he embarked with the 14th Reinforcements from Melbourne on board HMAT Clan Macgillivray (A46) on 2 February 1915. Pte Carroll was reported missing and killed in action after an engagement at Pozieres, France on 8 August 1916, aged 23. He is buried at the Serre Road Cemetery No. 2, Somme, France.
