Studio portrait of 3932 Private (Pte) Frank Joseph John South, 8th Battalion, of Abbotsford, Vic. A bootmaker prior to enlisting in July 1915, he embarked from Adelaide with the 12th Reinforcements on board HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 23 November 1915. The 8th Battalion arrived in Egypt in January 1916 and in April Pte South was transferred to the 59th Battalion. The unit arrived in France for service on the Western Front on 29 June 1916. Pte South was killed in action on 19 July 1916 at Fleurbaix, France, during the Battle of Fromelles. He was 25 years of age. Pte South's brother 1427 Pte Arthur Desborough South, 6th Battalion, was killed in action at Lone Pine, Gallipoli, on 7 August 1915. A cousin of the South brothers, 4748 Pte Percy Colston Caines, 59 Battalion was also killed at Fromelles on 19 July 1916.
