Informal portrait of Q194593 Lieutenant (Lt) William Ronald Griffith Stokes, 101 Australian Forward Ordnance Depot, of Manly, NSW. William Stokes, an accountant, enlisted in the Citizens Military Forces in July 1940. On 29 May 1941 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and arrived for service in New Guinea on 28 April 1942. Lt Stokes transferred to the AIF on 9 August 1942 and received the service number QX58362. He was promoted to the rank of Captain (Capt) on 26 August 1942. Capt Stokes died on 8 March 1943 of injuries resulting from enemy action. He was 32 years of age.
