Description
HMS Andrew, painted with number 623, moored at Gellibrand Pier during filming of the Stanley Kramer motion picture 'On The Beach' at Williamstown Naval Dockyard. Actor Ava Gardner can be seen in the foreground, back to camera. The RAN gave considerable support to this project. The aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne and the submarine HMS Andrew were used in the film, and several scenes were shot at Williamstown over a four day period, with RAN personnel being used as extras.
