Studio portrait of brothers 2562 Private (Pte) John (Jack) Adams (seated) and 2563 Pte George Raphael Burnard Adams, both 20th Battalion, of Tumbarumba, NSW. John, a labourer, and George, a butcher, enlisted together on 5 August 1915, and embarked with the 6th Reinforcements from Sydney onboard HMAT Euripides (A14) on 2 November. They arrived in France for service on the Western Front on 25 March 1916. The brothers took part in the Battle of Pozieres and Pte John Adams was killed in action on 26 July 1916, aged 23 years. Pte George Adams was awarded the Military Medal (MM) on 16 August 1916 for "conspicuous and continued bravery" at Pozieres. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal (Cpl) on 1 December 1916 and Sergeant (Sgt) on 7 July 1918. On 8 July 1918 he was wounded in action in France. Pte George Adams MM returned to Australia on 9 December 1918.
