Description

Composite studio portrait of 5036 Private (Pte) William Barrie, 1st Battalion, of Helensburgh North, NSW, with his family. A miner prior to enlisting on 15 December 1915, Pte Barrie embarked with the 16th Reinforcements from Sydney on board SS Makarini on 1 April 1916. Pte Barrie was killed in action while taking part in an attack on a German pillbox at Broodseinde, Belgium, on 4 October 1917. He was 40 years of age. The Barrie Family, from left: Lorna Margaret, Robert, Vera May, Nancy Waratah, Mrs Eliza Bertha Barrie, Jean, William and Pte William Barrie. Note that this photograph is a composite, as Nancy was born after Pte Barrie's departure for the Western Front and his preembarkation portrait has been superimposed to the right of the family group.
