Studio portrait of 4251 Private (Pte) Harold Roy Mayall, 7th Battalion of Mirboo North, Victoria with his siblings. A farmer prior to enlistment, Pte Mayall was promoted to Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) on 24 November 1915 and embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 29 December 1915. L/Cpl Mayall was killed in action near Ypres, Belgium on 30 September 1915, aged 22. In his Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing file, an eyewitness stated that "Casualty was taking part in a raid at Ypres. He was wounded by a shrapnel bullet. Casualty went into the German trenches and did his work well, and he died as we got back. Casualty was buried at Ypres." Six days after his death , L/Cpl Mayall was mentioned in despatches 'for participating in a very successful raid on the enemy trenches'. His brothers, 2274 Edwin Neil Mayall and 4250 Sydney Edward Mayall both served in the AIF and returned to Australia in 1919.
