Studio portrait of 2nd Lieutenant John Lindon Rule, 31st Battalion of Chatswood, NSW. A cashier prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements on HMAT Ballarat (A70) on 18 February 1916. He died the same day of wounds received while in the line at Flers, France, on 2 November 1916; he was aged 23.
