Studio portrait of 4453 Private (Pte) Francis (Frank) Johnston, 19th Battalion of Dulwich Hill, NSW. A clerk prior to enlisting in December 1915, Pte Johnston embarked from Sydney with the 11th Reinforcements on board HMAT Nestor (A17) on 9 April 1916. After further training in England he arrived in France for service on the Western Front on 24 September 1916. On 9 October 1916 he was transferred to the 53rd Battalion. He was killed in action on the Somme, France, on 25 October 1916. Pte Johnston was 26 years of age. His brother, 2705 Pte Charles Johnston, died on 20 July 1916 of wounds received in action at Fromelles, France.
