Studio portrait of 2796 Private (Pte) Robert Ashton Cavanagh, 11th Battalion, of Subiaco, WA. A grocer prior to enlisting in July 1915, Pte Cavanagh embarked from Fremantle with the 9th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) on 5 October 1915. In February 1916 he was transferred to the 51st Battalion and arrived in France for service on the Western Front on 12 June 1916. Pte Cavanagh was killed in action at Mouquet Farm, Pozieres, France, on 3 September 1916. He was 19 years of age.
