Studio portrait of 89 Trooper (Tpr) Henry Samuel Hugh McCarroll, 14th Light Horse Regiment, of Esk, Qld. A labourer prior to enlisting in October 1915, Tpr McCarroll embarked with A Squadron from Sydney aboard HMAT Beltana (A72) on 13 May 1916. On 5 August 1916 he was transferred to the 9th Battalion Reinforcements and arrived in France for service on the Western Front on 1 October 1916. On 13 October 1916 he was transferred to the 31st Battalion and remustered as a private (Pte). After treatment in England for trench foot, he was transferred to the 69th Battalion on 23 March 1917. Finally, he was transferred back to the 31st Battalion and returned to France on 26 October 1917. Pte McCarroll was killed in action at Bouzencourt, France, on 10 April 1918. He was 20 years of age.
