Studio portrait of 2950 Private (Pte) James Brocken, 47th Battalion, of Geeveston, Tas; formerly of Liverpool, England (right), an unidentified British soldier and an unidentified man in civilian clothing. Pte Brocken, a labourer prior to enlisting in July 1915, embarked from Melbourne with the 15th Battalion, 9th Reinforcements, aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) on 27 September 1915. They arrived in Egypt in February 1916 and in March Pte Brocken was transferred to the 47th Battalion. On 9 June 1916 he arrived in France for service on the Western Front. Pte Brocken was wounded in action at Pozieres, France, on 10 August 1916. On 2 May 1918, Pte Brocken died as a result of wounds received in action near Villers Bretonneux, France. He was 36 years of age.
