Studio portrait of 615 Private (Pte) William Thomas Dowdell, 10th Light Horse Regiment, of Border Town, SA. A farmer prior to enlistment he embarked with the 1st Reinforcements from Fremantle, WA on HMAT Surada (A52) on 17 February 1915. In early November 1916 he transferred to the 51st Battalion. He was was killed in action at Zonnebeke, Belgium, on 12 October 1917; he was 21 years of age. Dowdell has no known grave and his name is recorded on the The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. His brother 6310 Driver Davidson Clyde Dowdell, 1st Motor Transport Company, returned to Australia on 19 April 1919.
