Description

A spiral bound folder of research material, sourced primarily from various published and online resources, compiled by Commander Greg Swinden related to the service of Leading Cook Francis Bassett "Dick" Emms (1909-1942). Emms joined the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in 1928. He initially trained as an Ordinary Seaman at HMAS Cerberus, and following completion, joined the heavy cruiser HMAS Canberra in March 1929. He was promoted to Able Seaman in January 1930 and later qualified as a gunnery rating. Owing to failing eyesight during 1936, he transferred to Supply Branch, and was re-rated as a Cook (Officers) in February 1937. He was promoted to Acting Leading Cook (Officers) in April 1938, and this appointment was later confirmed. Emms died from wounds sustained during a Japanese attack on Darwin on 19 February 1942, and was awarded a posthumous Mention in Dispatches. Emms served on ships and depot ships HMAS Cerberus, Canberra, Australia, Penguin, Waterhen, Vendetta, Brisbane, Sydney, Stuart, Swan, Melville, and Kara Kara.
