Studio portrait of 2161 Sergeant Peter William Lyon, 11th Battalion, of Perth, WA. He embarked from Fremantle on 6 June 1915 aboard HMAT Geelong (A2). Later promoted to the rank of lieutenant, he was initially reported missing on 15 April 1917 but later confirmed as captured and taken Prisoner of War. He was interned at Krefeld and Karlsruhe POW camps before being sent to Holzminden. Lyon was caught on the Dutch border 12 days after escaping from Holzminden in July 1918. Twenty nine men escaped through a tunnel that took nine months to dig. Nineteen men, including Lt Lyon, were recaptured; the other ten managed to make it over the Dutch border with the aid of the map provided by 2875 Private John Richard (Dick) Cash, 19th Battalion, of Thirlmere, NSW.
