Lyall, Alexander (Lance Corporal, b.1891 - d.1956)
Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of 262 Lance Corporal Alexander Lyall, 17 Battalion, France. Collection consists of an original handwritten diary covering Lyall's service in France and time in England. The diary commences with Lyall's arrival in France in April 1916. He comments on the weather, the trenches, bombardment by the enemy, the battalion's movement during June and July to near Albert and heavy fighting at the end of July in which he was wounded. In August he was evacuated to England to recuperate (and spent some time Ireland), and the remainder of the diary is written from there.
