Studio portrait of 2631 Private (Pte) John Roxburgh, 38th Battalion, of Manly, NSW. Pte Roxburgh, a gas stoker prior to enlisting in September 1916, embarked from Sydney with the 5th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Benalla (A24) on 9 November 1916. He was wounded in action in France by a gun shot wound to the leg on 20 July 1918, and was invalided to England aboard the hospital ship HMAT Warilda. On 3 August 1918 the Warilda was sunk by a German submarine off the coast of Le Havre, France. Pte Roxburgh and 124 others died. He was 33 years of age.
