Woodbury, Stephen Bernard (Private, b.1894 - d.1917)
Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of 2674 Private Stephen Bernard Woodbury, 37th Battalion, 1917.
The collection consists of a letter Woodbury wrote to his brother Herbert from an army training camp in England in February 1917. He discusses his present training schedule and improved physical fitness, before moving on to British politics. He remarks on the replacement of the Viscount Grey by Arthur Balfour as Foreign Secretary, the appointment of Admiral Sir David Beatty as commander-in-chief of the Grand Fleet, and Admiral Sir John Jellicoe's elevation to First Sea Lord. He also writes of the sense of confidence among the public in England that Britain will win the war.
