Studio portrait of 243 Private (Pte) Sydney Carl Joseph Giles, 5th Machine Gun Company, of Newtown, Sydney, NSW, son of John C and Sarah B. L. Giles. A storeman prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) on 2 May 1916. He was killed in action in France on 14 November 1916, aged 24. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
