Studio portrait of 1436 Pte John Bowden Ritchie, (alias John Ricketts), 1st (later 1st Machine Gun Company) Battalion, of Sydney, NSW, son of Charlotte Ritchie, of Wingham, NSW, and the late Alexander Ritchie. A labourer prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT See Bang (A48) on 11 February 1915. He was killed in action at Pozieres, France on 19 August 1916, aged 22. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
