Studio portrait of 758 Cpl (later Sgt) Herbert George Finch, 36th Battalion, of Marrickville, NSW, son of Joseph and Louisa Elizabeth Finch. A locomotive engine cleaner and fireman prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Beltana (A72) on 13 May 1916. He was killed in action at Armentieres, France on 18 December 1916, aged 21. He is buried in the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France.
