Description

Studio portrait of 2036 Private (Pte) Kenneth Laird, 22nd Battalion, of Serpentine, Vic. A farmer prior to enlistment he embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements from Melbourne on board HMAT Anchises (A68) on 26 August 1915. He later transferred to the 6th Australian Light Horse Trench Mortar Battery on 12 May 1916. Pte Laird was wounded in action the night of 1/2 July 1916; he was treated at the 6th Field Ambulance, then transferred to the 1st Casualty Clearing Station where he died on 2 July 1916, aged 27. He is buried at the Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
