In 1943 Flt Lt Litchfield was stationed as an instructor at Lulsgate Bottom, RAF, near Bristol, and at Montrose, Scotland, later in 1943 and in 1944. He joined Bomber Command in the Pathfinders Division in 1944 and was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) in July 1945, for 'skill and fortitude in operations against the enemy' whilst serving with 142 Squadron RAF. Flt Lt Gordon served with RAF Transport, ferrying aircraft to different countries, including India.
