Description

The crew of HMAS Sydney line the decks as it is greeted by a large crowd on the foreshore. The Sydney has entered Sydney Harbour after returning to Australia following its successful campaign in the Mediterranean. The following day her crew, commanded by Captain John Augustine Collins, were given a welcoming parade in Martin Place and were later feted with a civic reception and luncheon at Sydney Town Hall. On 20 November 1941 the Sydney was sunk with the loss of all hands after a battle with the German raider Kormoran.
