Derkenne, Edward Gerrard (Staff Sergeant, b.1914)
Description
Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX45942 Staff Sergeant Edward Gerrard Derkenne, 2/20 Australian Infantry Battalion, AIF. Collection consists of two original handwritten letters written by Derkenne to his family. One letter is dated 13 July 1941 from Malaya, and the other is undated and sent from Herne Bay. The letter written from Malaya describes the new landscapes Derkenne experiences, how he spends free time, work and living conditions, and humorously chastises his sister for not writing often enough. The second letter contains a recipe for Derkenne's celebrated 'home brew' (along with cartoon sketches to illustrate the process), and wishes his family well for the New Year (1946).
