FO Chivers enlisted in the RAAF on 20 July 1941, and after completing his Observer training was posted to 100 Squadron. On 25 February 1943, FO Chivers was a member of the crew of Beaufort aircraft A9-197 which failed to return to its base at Gurney Airfield near Milne Bay, New Guinea.
