Studio portrait of 7459 Private (Pte) Valentine Scott Aloysius Cain, 4th Battalion, of Port Macquarie, NSW. Pte Cain, a labourer prior to enlisting in April 1917, embarked from Sydney with the 25th Reinforcements on board HMAT Euripides (A14) on 31 October 1917. He arrived for service in France on 1 April 1918 and was wounded in action at Hargicourt, the Somme, on 20 September 1918. Pte Cain died at the American 12th General Hospital, France, on 4 October 1918. He was 20 years of age.
