Studio portrait of 3639 Private (Pte) Leonard Smith, 23rd Battalion, of Toora, Vic, formerly of Northamptonshire, England. A labourer prior to enlisting in September 1915, Pte Smith embarked from Melbourne with the 8th Reinforcements on board HMAT Afric (A19) on 5 January 1916. In France, he was transferred to the 24th Battalion on 6 June and to the 22nd Battalion on 17 August. Pte Smith was killed in action near Pozieres, France, on 26 August 1916. He was 22 years of age.
