Description

Studio portrait of 2816 Private Frederick William Tooth, 23rd Battalion, of Sydney, NSW. A motor mechanic prior to enlistment he embarked from Melbourne, Vic, with the 6th Reinforcements on board HMAT Ulysses (A38) on 27 October 1915. He was taken on strength and transferred to the 58th Battalion in February; then to the 59th Battalion March 1916. Tooth was appointed to the rank of Lance Corporal in June 1917 and then promoted to Corporal (Cpl) on 19 September 1917. Cpl Tooth was killed in action on 26 September 1917. He has no known grave and his name is commomerated on The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
