Studio portrait of 2474 Private (Pte) Malcolm Alexander Nicholson, 49th Battalion, of Bowenville, Qld. A grazier prior to enlistment he embarked from Brisbane with the 5th Reinforcements on board HMAT Seang Choon (A49) on 19 September 1916. Nilcholson was one of the 4th Australian Division to be presented by General Birdwood with a silver medal in the rifle meeting in the Company match on the Somme 8 May 1917. The next month Pte Nicholson was killed in action on 7 June 1917, he was 26 years of age. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. His brother 2475 Pte Kenneth Edwin Nicholson, 49th Battalion returned to Australia on 18 November 1916.
