Studio portrait of 2427 Private (Pte) Jack Tehan (left), 8th Battalion, of Dixie, Vic, and an unidentified soldier. A farmer prior to enlisting in May 1915, Pte Tehan embarked from Melbourne with the 7th Reinforcements on board HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 6 July 1915. He served at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. Pte Tehan was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) in November 1917 "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as a scout". He was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal in January 1918 and to Corporal (Cpl) on 15 August 1918. Cpl Tehan DCM was wounded in action in September 1918 and invalided to England. He was discharged in August 1919 and returned to Australia. Three of Cpl Tehan's eight brothers also enlisted. 2979 Pte Gerald Tehan was killed in action on 7 November 1917. 254 Sergeant Thomas Tehan and 3265 William Tehan returned to Australia in 1919.
