Studio portrait of 3404 Private (Pte) Francis Joseph O'Callaghan, 6th Battalion, of Ballarat, Vic. A moulder prior to enlisting in July 1915, Pte O'Callaghan embarked from Melbourne with the 11th Reinforcements on board HMAT Nestor (A71) on 11 October 1915. He arrived in France for service on the Western Front in April 1916. Pte O'Callaghan was transferred to the 11th Machine Gun Company on 20 January 1917. On 24 June 1917 he was awarded the Military Medal (MM) for his service at the battle of Messines, Belgium. Pte O'Callaghan MM was killed in action during an air raid at Poperinghe, Belgium, on 29 September 1917. He was 22 years of age.
