Studio portrait of 2890 Private (Pte) Ernest William Richards, 39th Battalion, of Maylands, WA; formerly of Devonport, England. A farm hand prior to enlisting in November 1916, Pte Richards embarked from Fremantle with the 6th Reinforcements on board HMAT Persic (A34) on 29 December 1916. He arrived in France for service on the Western Front on 17 July 1917. Pte Richards was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium, on 12 October 1917. He was 25 years of age.
