Group portrait of 18 Prisoners of War at Stalag XVIIIa working camp A 95/GW, Austria. In a letter to his wife dated 2 June 1944, NX14129 Private Henry James Sparkes (front row, 3rd from left) wrote "I am sending a snap, its not much, still you have all the others, rather I hope you have as Ive (sic) sent them, I look very small in this snap, the reason been (sic) I have shorts & slippers on for I had just finished a shadow exhibition with the gloves, the chap with the guitar is a little lonely Maori who can make your heart throb with his Hawaiian songs."
Part of a series of photographs, letters and related items recording the service of Pte Sparkes who wrote reguarly to his wife from the time he began training early in 1940, through his service in North Africa and his internment following his capture in Greece in April 1941.
