Group portrait of three Allied Prisoners of War at Stalag XVIIIa working camp A 149/L near Wolfsburg, including NX14129 Private (Pte) Henry James Sparkes, 2/2 Battalion (on right). The first of many photos he would send home during his captivity, this was stapled to a postcard written to his wife on 26 October 1941 with the message: " Dear Bess, Well my love heres (sic) that man again, still as happy as ever hoping you and "Babs" are the same, how is that sunny land, here it is snowing like one thing and freezing. What do you think of the photo? I had it taken just to show you I can still keep the chin up...". The following week he wrote again: "...hope you received the photos I sent to you and like them, the chap in centre is a Tommy, outside one an N.Z. and of course I represent the sunny land...".
Part of a series of photographs, letters and related items recording the service of Pte Sparkes who wrote reguarly to his wife from the time he began training early in 1940, through his service in North Africa and his internment following his capture in Greece in April 1941.
