Studio portrait of Private (Pte) 4441 William Charles Watson. Pte Watson enlisted with 9th Battalion on the 16 August 1915 and was transferred to the 31st Battalion in France on 11 October 1916. A month later he was wounded in action and had his thumb amputated. He spent two days with the 17th Field Ambulance before being transferred to the Broadgauge Railway Operating Company for the next eight months. He was then transferred to Light Railway Operating Company and was detached to 5 New Zealand Light Railway Operating company and finally returned to Broadgauge at the end of December 1917. Watson contracted gastro-enerities on the 22 April 1918 and returned to Australia on the 23 July 1918 and was discharged unfit for service on the 13 November 1918. The Australian War Memorial holds a collection of material relating to Pte Watson.
